Jack Garswood used a 32 on the back nine and a birdie on the 18th hole to win by one stroke at Portage Country Club in the Great Lakes Auto Scratch Series Stroke Play #4.
“I got off to a good start with an eagle at two,” Garswood said. “I doubled (bogeyed) six, but kind of the turning point was a flop shot I put to a foot on seven and made birdie.”
Garswood made an eagle and six birdies in his round. “I am really happy with it,” Garswood said. “I haven’t been playing so the 66 really came out of nowhere.”
Shaun Kloetzer finished at 3-under par with a round of 67. He shot 32 on the front nine. “I drove the ball straight all day and that put me in a lot of good positions,” Kloetzer said. “I hit my wedges better than normal today.”
Brian Smith also finished under par along with Garswood and Kloetzer, shooting a 69 (-1) to finish in solo third place.
In the Senior Division, Robert Schustrich shot an even par round of 70 take first place. “I hit the ball good at times,” Schustrich said. “I made some really, really good pars. The irons at times were good but every once in a while, I hit a bad shot. I just kept grinding and grinding away and I ended up making a bunch of pars. I parred eight holes in a row.”
Schustrich added “It was just a good solid round grinding away.”
Tom Skidmore finished 1-over par to earn solo second place. Tom Baugh, John Toth, Tom Jereb, Scott Saari all finished tied for third place with rounds of 72.
In the Super Senior Division, Bill Downing and Ron Hulett both shot a 71 to finish tied at 1-over par.
