Nathan Tarter Shoots 65 to Win 70th Tigertown Open
Mogadore’s Nathan Tarter put together seven birdies, two bogeys and a par-4 eagle to shoot 7-under par 65 and win the 2021 edition of the Tigertown Open on Friday at The Elms Country Club of Massillon.
That score was good enough to nip Strongsville pro Jake Scott and Akron amateur Ryan Gutowski by one shot.
The difference maker was Tarter’s eagle on the par-4 14th hole, as his drive on the 295-yard hole landed 12-feet from the pin. He converted the putt to get to 7-under par on the day, then parred the final four in from there.
“I was putting really well today, so I focused on just getting the ball anywhere on the green to give myself a chance,” said Tarter.
Tarter’s one-shot victory earned him Tigertown’s renowned $5,000 first place prize, while Scott finished solo second in the Pro Division to garner the $1,500 runner-up amount.
Past champion Stephen Gangluff, defending champion Blake Sattler and Matt Gurska all finished tied for third place in the Pro Division at 67.
In finishing T2 overall, Gutowski won the Amateur Division by one shot over Massillon’s Vaughn Snyder. The two played together.
Snyder led for most of the day, as Gutowski made double-bogey six on the par-4 fifth hole after hitting a tree near the tee. But he bounced back with back-nine birdies. Meanwhile, Snyder was bogey-free coming into the final hole at The Elms.
The pair was tied at 6-under par coming into the difficult par-4 18th, which features a treacherously sloping green.
Snyder made his only bogey of the day at the last when he pitched his third shot from short of the green past the hole and into the back rough, then couldn’t hole the short come-back chip.
Gary Rusnak of Painesville took the Senior Professional title with a solid 3-under par 69, winning the newly increased first place prize of $1,500. He won the division by four shots over three players.
Playing in one of the last groups of the day, Rob Wakeling of Hudson put together a 68 to win the Senior Amateur Division, good for a two-shot victory over Mike Bauman of Galena.
All of the top finishers in the tournament except Wakeling earned a break from Mother Nature by drawing a morning wave starting time, as the early half of the field benefitted from sunshine and dry weather. The afternoon wave wasn’t as lucky, as a series of rain showers slowed play throughout the afternoon, and lightning paused the proceedings for about 20 minutes with about an hour’s worth of play still out on the golf course.
The shot of the day belonged to Randy Crider of Brunswick, who dunked his second shot on the par-4 18th hole to generate an eagle roar from his fellow competitors.
