It was a two team race in the Championship Division at the 2020 Northern Ohio Golf Association’s Summer Four-Ball at Glenmoor Country Club, part of the Great Lakes Auto Scratch Series.
Nate Matthews and Rob Schustrich rolled to a 10-under par 62 — even with a bogey at the finishing hole — to edge out Kurt Peterson and Josh Clay who made birdie at 18 to shoot 63 in the better ball format.
Then four shots behind the runners-up were Daniel Grincewicz and Jon Nagy, finishing in third place with a 67.
Schustrich made an eagle and four birdies on the day, while Matthews tossed in a whopping seven birdies.
But even though they came up one shot shy, Peterson and Clay went home nearly as happy as the victors: both players made eagle-3 on the par-5 sixth hole to win one of two skins in the division, good for a bonus $480.
SENIOR DIVISION
In the Senior Division, Mark Borlin made a downhill 20-foot right-to-left birdie putt on the final hole for the team to reach 8-under par 64, pushing him and partner Allen Freeman just past Rick Bryson and Jim Hercheck by one shot.
Another shot behind in third place were Jim Cea and Bruno Chirumbolo, thanks to their back nine charge.
Bryson and Hercheck got off to a roaring start, as Bryson went 5-under par through the first seven holes on his own ball! Hercheck added a birdie on the 8th for the team to turn at 6-under par. But the pair cooled on the back nine, making just one more birdie to finish.
Borlin and Freeman ham-and-egged it all day, tossing in a pair of chip-in birdies and a pair of big par saves to keep their card clean.
The next event on the 2020 NOGA Great Lakes Auto Scratch Series calendar is the Fall Stroke Play at Brookside Country Club in Canton on Thursday, September 10th.
