Canton’s Bobby Spino posted a 2-under par 69 to beat a big field at the 2019 Senior Chippewa Championship in Doylestown today.
Spino’s score was good for the overall victory against the full field and a win in the 50-59 Age Division.
In both, Spino won by a single shot over Doug Rockich and Doug Fleming. Both runners-up had their chances to grab the trophy: Rockich made bogey on his last two holes, and Fleming missed a short putt at his last.
In the 60-69 Age Division, Ron Bell beat good friend Jim Cea while playing together in the same group. Cea led for most of the day, but Bell past him right at the end to win by one, 72 to 73.
Tom Kloetzer captured the 70+ Age Division by a single shot over Akron golf legend Larry Horner, 77 to 78. Kloetzer, whose son Shaun won the 2016 Chippewa Championship, started his day on The Triangle at Chippewa (holes 14-16) and immediately was knocked back, going five over par there. So Tom’s victory was a strong comeback, to say the least.
One man took the entire $1,720 big skins pot on the par-5 third hole: Doug Fleming made eagle-3 to sweep it all.
But not without some eyebrow-raising help.
Parma’s Keith Pluto holed out an iron shot from the fairway on the difficult par-4 15th hole in The Triangle at Chippewa, making an eagle-2 that is usually a lock skin. Except when the player decides not to put $20 into the skins pot. Then an eagle hole-out is not a skin.
Hopefully, this sad, sad lesson will not be lost on future tournament entrants.
Case in point: today’s entry fee was a mere $50 for golf+cart, tournament prizes, beer+burger at the turn, and a complete steak dinner after — filet, too, perfectly prepared to perfection by clubhouse chefs Denise and Jeff.
So hear hear: thanks to everyone at Team Chippewa for today’s fantastic golf experience, fabulous food and beverages, and the deal of the century for the old guys!
