The Northern Ohio Golf Association‘s first-ever tournament for women was played on Monday, July 8th at Silver Lake Country Club: the NOGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship.
Yes, the field was on the small side with just 10 competitors total. But the event is now established, and will certainly grow over time.
Plus the field showed some true golf talent and plenty of competitiveness, too.
Congress Lake Club’s Shirley Vaughn (above left) won the inaugural event’s AA Division with a fantastic score of even-par 72. Making three birdies against three bogeys on the day, Vaughn bested Olivia Hochschwender by six shots to win the first title.
The Senior AA Division featured just a two players competing, but it was a back-and-forth contest to the end. Denise Callahan (above right) shot 81 to nip Gail Hackett, who finished with an 82. Hackett made a fantastic charge at the end of her round, playing her last five holes in 1-under par as Callahan finished with three straight bogeys. But Callahan had banked just enough of a lead throughout the day to hold on to victory in the end.
The Senior A Division finished with a tie at the top. Ann Godwin and Theresa Stotler both finished the day with a score of 94. Since Godwin’s handicap is just a bit higher, she was awarded net honors while Stotler earned the gross score prize.
