Two players added to their victory totals in the 2019 Northern Ohio Golf Associaton tournament season at today’s Stroke Play East at Youngstown Country Club.
In the AA Division, Chris Okeson of Lyndhurst won his third NOGA tournament of the season, when for most of the day it looked like he was running in jello. His first birdie of the day came at the par-4 13th to get him back to even par on his round. He immediately gave back the shot he earned with a bogey at the next, then made double on the following hole after going long left on 15.
But a solid par at the long three-shot 16th, followed by a birdie at both 17 and 18, and Okeson had a 1-over par 72 total on the day — and a squeaker victory.
Oberlin’s Ben Hogan turned the front nine in a sizzling 2-under par 34, then made birdie on the 10th to grab full control of the tournament. But the next six holes were a roller-coaster for Hogan: bogey, double, bogey, birdie, bogey, bogey. Two pars at the last gave him a round of 73 and a disappointing T2 finish.
Ian Hardesty of Chardon also finished in a tie for second place at 73. Standing at even par for the day after a consistent 14 holes, Hardesty made bogey at the 15th and then made bogey instead of the birdie he was looking for at the par-5 17th to let Okeson slip past him.
With this third NOGA victory, Okeson now has a 200 point lead in the NOGA Player of the Year race.
In the Senior AA Division, Silver Lake’s Jim Durr also added to his 2019 NOGA wins total. Fresh off a miss of match play after qualifying for the 2019 U.S. Senior Am in NC, Durr became a late entry into the Youngstown event and made it his second NOGA win of the season. His first win this year was the Senior Division of the Northeast Ohio Am.
Durr shot a 2-over par 73 to finish with a three-shot victory over Richard Marlowe.
Britt Lilley won the A Division with a 78, while Dave Cooper took the Senior A Division with a solid 75. And Alan Dimare shot an impressive 78 to win the Senior B Divison. Complete results below.
The shot of the day belonged to a player in the Senior C Division. Tim Habeck of Akron made an eagle-3 on the par-5 fifth hole at Youngstown Country Club, which of course earned him a skin in his division.
