The only way to make a perfect, sunny September day at Firestone Country Club’s North Course any better is to make five birdies and an eagle on your way to shooting 68 and winning a golf tournament.
That’s what Ben Hogan of Oberlin did Monday in the 2019 Northern Ohio Golf Association’s Patriots Cup, a benefit competition for the Folds of Honor supporting military families.
Even with his great round in a modified Stableford points format, Hogan managed but a one point victory over David Kilgore of Salem, who reeled off five birdies of his own and a score of 69.
Steve Schaefer took the Senior AA Division with 33 points, beating Scott Saari by two points (although Saari’s birdie reaction above is priceless).
Emily Baumgartner showed plenty of skills, capturing the Women’s Division by five points.
With six handicap flights from AA through E, plus a Senior Division for each, plus the Women, there were a good number of champions crowned at the Patriots Cup — all of whom are recognized below.
But the big winners were the 100+ players who were able to enjoy a spectacular day at Firestone North under tournament-quality course conditions (for $100 with lunch after golf!) while setting up a nice donation to a worthwhile charity…
