The ‘Spring That Would Not Come” saga continued at Shaker Heights Country Club on Monday, as the C, D and E Flights of the Northern Ohio Golf Association squared off in their 2019 Four-Ball Championships and Match Play Qualifying.
The wind kept getting colder and the skies kept getting darker as the day went on. Couple that declining weather with some thick rough, slick greens and tricky hole locations, and Shaker made for a rough scoring day on the field.
But a few teams did overcome.
In the C Flight, Ted Mailey of Lake Forest and Evan Shafer out of Big Met posted a score of 76 to capture their division by a single shot over Kevin Monroe and Frank Neer of Madison Country Club. Both of those teams also won a skin on the day to better their haul.
Bob Emmerich and Bill Reilly from Avon Oaks Country Club shot the best gross score of the day, fighting their way to a 4-over par 75 which included three natural birdies on the card. That result was good for a one-shot win in the D Flight over Joey Huang and Rob David from the Country Club of Hudson, at 76.
In the E Flight, another score of 76 won for the team of Paul Gibbons and Mike Gary of Chagrin Valley Country Club. That pair also wrote three natural birdies on their scorecard, winning their division by two shots over Dan Pyle and Seth Severin of Beechmont Country Club.
