Looking at the golf course, no odds-maker in the world would have set the winning score at 12-under for this 2-player amateur scramble — because there would be no takers.
But that’s what the team of Mike Simpson and Jim Krivanek shot Saturday at Turkeyfoot in the 2015 spring scramble.
The pair birdied all the holes they needed to birdie, plus added an eagle 2 at the par-4 fifth hole and tough par-3 birdies at holes 8 and 13 to shoot the fantastic score of 59.
But amazingly, they were challenged for that victory right up to the end.
The team of Dave Sotka and Steve Blackburn Jr. stayed directly on the winner’s heels, tied heading into the finishing par-5 18th at 11-under par. A good tee shot and reasonable second put them in the rough 20 yards short of the green. But they couldn’t wedge it close out of the thick rough and neither could coax in the 10-footer for birdie, so they finished one back of the winners.
Also playing well on the day, finishing just one more shot back at 10-under par, was the team of Aaron Crewse and Brian Vincelette.
From there, a pack of four challengers finished tied for fourth place at 8-under par.
Two teams split the skins pot on the day: an eagle 2 at the par-4 first hole by Shayne Bishop and Mike Sissler, and an eagle 3 at the par-5 sixth hole by Larry Lahnan and Rick Arredy.
