Brian Smith of Amherst posted an even par round of 71 to capture the first playing of the Medina County Amateur Golf Championship on Sunday at Shale Creek Golf Club.
Smith had a sizzling finish to take the title, making birdie-birdie-par at the tough final stretch of holes. That comeback charge nipped Allen Freeman of Brecksville and Dave Trier of Stow by a single shot. The birdie at the 198 yard par-3 17th also earned Smith a skin.
In the Senior Division, Randy Crider of Brunswick shot a 1-under par round of 70 to best Medina’s own Ron Skirpstas by one shot. Crider birdied holes 15 and 16 down the stretch.
Tournament Director Ty Kovach did well to run a solid first-year tournament and he hopes to expand the event in 2015 with a mid-summer date.
