The Fairways at Twin Lakes in Kent held their 27-hole Course Championship on Saturday in some truly tough weather conditions: chilly, windy, rainy.
But that couldn’t stop Rob Schustrich.
After the first nine holes, Chris Plute and Tommi Li were tied with 2-over par 37 in the worst of the windy and cold conditions.
After the second 9 holes, Chris Plute was in the lead with 3-over par 73 and right behind him with 4-over par 74 was Rob Schustrich and Brent Pfiefer, with Mark Thomas close behind at 5-over par 75.
The final nine holes, playing from the front gold tees, gave the 18 hole leader Chris Plute some trouble. The greens picked up speed and led Chris Plute to have three 3 putts to finish with a 39 and 7-over par 112 which put him in a tie with Brent Pfiefer who shot 38-36-38.
With the last foursome still on the course, it came down to the last few holes to determine a winner. Mark Thomas and Rob Schustrich, both playing in the last group, turned the tournament into a 2-man shootout coming down the stretch.
Mark Thomas made it exciting with a difficult birdie on hole 26 to get within one shot of the leader Rob Schustrich.
Coming to hole 27, both players hit decent tee shots, but Mark Thomas went over the green on his second shot and was forced into a ridiculous up and down situation. Rob Schustrich left his second shot short, but with an easier up and down.
Rob chipped it to 4 feet.
Mark Thomas then hit an amazing chip within 12 feet and then made the putt to save par!
So the tournament comes down to a 4-foot putt for par for Rob Schustrich, who stepped up and knocked it straight in.
Rob Schustrich won with an amazing 3-over par 108 in truly difficult conditions.
