PERRYSBURG’S MIKE STONE TAKES 1-SHOT LEAD OVER TWO PLAYERS INTO WEDNESDAY FINALE

Northern Ohio PGABelmont Country Club pro Mike Stone will take a one-shot lead into Wednesday’s final round of the Northern Ohio PGA Professional Championship at stoic Portage Country Club.

Stone, of Perrysburg, shot a second-round 70 on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 2-under 138 for a one-shot lead over former champion Mitch Camp (Club Walden) and Mount Vernon Country Club’s Jim Troy. Four-time champion Gary Robison (Canton Brookside Country Club) is alone in fourth place at even-140 as he attempts to join Rob Moss as the only players with five Section titles on their resumes.

Camp, a two-time champion, shot the day’s lowest round at 3-under 67 to climb into contention for his first Section title since 1993.

The top five finishers, plus four alternates, will qualify for the 53d annual PGA Professional Championship, April 26-29, at the Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, Texas.

Stone, 47, is seeking his second straight trip to the Nationals after finishing in a tie for second in last year’s Section play.

“There is a lot of golf left to play and you don’t want to think too far ahead,” said Stone, a graduate of Toledo St. John’s High and the University of Toledo. “But, it would be nice to get back to the National.”

After sharing the first-round lead with Troy and Mayfield Sand Ridge pro Mark Evans at 2-under 68, Stone birdied the difficult 366-yard 18th by making a 5-foot putt from below the hole on a green that slopes severely from back to front.

“That putt had some pace to it and about four-to-five inches of break,” said Stone.

Stone also birdied the first hole by making a 20-footer and followed with seven pars before another birdie on the 552-yard ninth.

Camp, the champion in 1989 and 1993, made nine consecutive pars on holes eight through 16 and needed 33 putts to get in contention. He birdied three holes on the front to go out in 3-under 32, then had a birdie and a bogey coming in.

The field of nearly 60 players was trimmed to the low 25 scores and ties for Wednesday’s final round. A total of 26 players advanced with scores of 147 (7-over) or better.
