Jeff Semple made bogey on his shotgun start opening hole, then posted five birdies over his last 17 at Good Park Golf Course in Akron to lead the 2024 Senior Summit County Amateur Championship by three shots after the first round.
Semple made bogey on the reachable par-5 14th hole to start, but then countered with birdies on 2, 7, 12, 13 and 18. (The birdies at 7 and 18 were strong; the birdies at 12 and 13 closed out his round).
Rob Wakeling, Dean Cutlip, and past champion Howard Clendenin all shot 1-under par 70, while Keith Hughes, Ron Chapman, and Allen Freeman posted even par 71.
Tom Sipe holed his second shot at the par-4 eighth to win one of two skins out on the day, while Brian Beebe made the only birdie on the straight-forward par-4 11th hole to capture the day’s other skin. Skins were worth a tidy $450 each. (Mike Stiller could have cashed in a skin with a chip-in eagle at the par-5 14th hole, but chose to save himself the $10 skins entry.)
Players will tee off by score in two waves for Saturday’s final round.
