Two aspiring professionals and one amateur share the lead after shooting first-round 65s in the 103rd Ohio Open at Westfield Country Club.
The professionals are defending champion Michael Balcar and former Ohio State standout Maxwell Moldovan, while the one amateur is Ball State senior Ali Khan, of Westerville.
All three posted their 5-under par rounds on the South Course.
Cincinnati professional Kevin Hall, a former Big Ten champion out of Ohio State, Bowling Green amateur Thomas Bell, and PGA Americas Tour professional Jake Scott of Strongsville, are tied for second place at 4-under par 66 . Seven players, including Moldovan’s former teammate Jack Vojtko, of Stow, are tied at 67.
Hall and Scott played on the South while Bell played on the North.
Balcar, who last year set a scoring record for Ohio Opens played at Westfield at 14-under 196, birdied the final two holes on the front then birdied the first two on the back. He finished with seven straight pars.
His round was one shot better than his opening round last year when the tournament was played under adverse weather conditions. Monday was sunny with temperatures in the low 70s. An on-and-off wind swirled throughout the day.
Moldovan, who became the most decorated player to come out of Ohio State before graduating in May, birdied four of his first six holes while shooting 4-under 32 on the front. He added two more birdies on the back before closing with his second bogey on the 18th hole.
The Green High graduate and former Ohio Amateur champ has earned a spot on the PGA Americas Tour and played in the past two events on that tour in Canada.
Khan, 22, punctuated his round with an eagle on the 358-yard third hole when his second shot from 134 yards landed five yards in front of the green and rolled into the hole.
The second-round of the scheduled 54 begins Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. The field of 288 will be cut to the top 60 and ties for Wednesday’s final 18 holes to be played on the South Course.
