RD1 RESULTS: 2023 Summit County Amateur Championship

Akron’s Ryan Gutowski leads the 2023 Summit County Amateur Championship by one shot after posting a 4-under par 67 on Saturday at Good Park.

Gutowski started his round with a birdie on the first, but gave it right back with a bogey on the par-5 second hole. His card was clean from there, as he made birdies at Holes 5, 8, 12 and 14 and made pars at the rest.

Three players sit one shot behind Gutowski at 68 heading into Sunday. That trio includes defending champion Solomon Petrie of Akron who plays golf for the University of Kentucky, Stow’s Dylan Dunn who plays at Ashland University, and Darin Hudak of Tallmadge who plays for Bowling Green.

Another shot behind the contingent in second is past champion Aaron Crewse of North Canton, who used some magic punch-outs from the tree lines of Good Park to fashion a 2-under par 69.

Nolan Haynes, Cole Christman and Thomas Bell sit at 1-under par 70 after Saturday’s play, and at even par are Kyle Buzaki, Josh Clay, Braden Herstich, Dillon Pendergast, and Justin Trzebuchowski.

In an eyebrow raising development, total of 14 players did not get into the skins game this year and it greatly affected the Round 1 skins outcome. Surprisingly, skins were won on Saturday with birdies on the par-3 ninth hole and the par-4 11th hole. But several players who did not get into the skins game made birdies on those two holes, which would have canceled those two wins. End result, the hole-out by Jake Sylak from 150-yards on the par-4 16th hole netted him only $390 instead of the entire Saturday skins pot of $1,170. Steve Fricker and Garrison Flora were the happy benefactors.
