Randy Dietz has first round lead by one at 2-under par 70
Randy Dietz, Coaching & Teaching Professional at the Windmill Golf Center, has the first-round lead in the 73rd Professional Championship conducted by the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America.
Dietz, who finished second in this event last year, opened the 54-hole tournament with a round of 2-under 70 (34-36) and will take a one-shot lead into Tuesday’s second-round at Tippecanoe Golf Club.
Pepper Pike Club Head Professional and five-time champion Rob Moss (36-35) and Beechmont Country Club Head Professional and 2020 champion Jaysen Hansen (35-36) share second place, along with Canterbury Golf Club Head Professional Jason Carbone (34-37) all at 1-under 71.
Dietz, the current leader in the NOPGA Player-of-the-Year race, led everyone with six birdies over Tippecanoe’s 6,693 yards. Three of his birdies came on the four par-5 holes. After making his last birdie on the 139-yard 16th hole to get to 4-under, he finished with consecutive bogeys.
Play resumes on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The field will be cut to the low 27 scores and ties after the second round.
Emily Heikkila leads Ladies Professional Championship
Trumbull Country Club Assistant Professional Emily Heikkila will take a two-shot lead into Tuesday’s final 18 holes after shooting a 6-over 78 in Monday’s first round.
Heikkila, a Tiffin University graduate and former Northern Ohio PGA Works Fellow, shot 1-over 37 on the back nine and leads Westfield Country Club assistant Averi Hanna (43-37) by two shots and has a 3-shot edge on two-time champion Mary Suitca (40-41), Head Professional at Tannenhauf Golf Club.
Heikkila, runnerup in this event last year when it was played at Westfield Country Club, built her lead during a six-hole stretch that began with birdies on the ninth and 10th holes. She followed with three consecutive pars and another birdie on the par-5 14th.
The final round begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
