MCBRIDE OPENS DEFENSE OF OHIO OPEN TITLE WITH 67; SHARES LEAD WITH THREE OTHERS
Defending champion Jake McBride shot an opening 3-under 67 on Monday and shared the first round lead in the Pyramid Treating Ohio Open Championship at Westfield Country Club.
McBride, from Hartville, recovered from consecutive bogeys early on the back nine and finished with two birdies over his final four holes to open defense of the title he won last year in playoff fashion.
Pickerington’s Nick Montes, Cincinnati’s Mason Lenhart and Dublin amateur Davis Root also had 67s on a sunny but windy day on the North and South Courses.
Montes, a former Kent State player who used a Covid rule that gave an extra year of eligibility to collegiate athletes to transfer to Stetson, played bogey-free over his final nine holes to post a 32 to go with a front-side 35. The 24-year-old finished third in this rain-shortened event last year with rounds of 66-67-133, four shots behind McBride and Justin Lower.
Root, a senior at Wright State, played bogey-free all day in going 33-34 on the North Course.
Lenhart, who played at the University of Cincinnati, used an eagle and three birdies to offset a pair of bogeys to go 34-33 on the less-windier South.
McBride, a Lake High School and North Carolina State graduate, birdied three holes on the South’s front nine but suffered consecutive bogeys on the 12th and 13th holes to fall out of a share of the lead with Montes, who was in the clubhouse.
He righted himself with birdies on the 472-yard 15th and the closing hole by making putts of eight and 15 feet. He also birdied both par-5s on the front by reaching the front edge of the green and two-putting.
Three-time champion Bob Sowards, of Dublin, is one shot back of the leaders. Sowards can become the first player to win both the Ohio Open and the Ohio Senior Open in the same year.
Despite the windy conditions 39 players were able to shoot par or better. Sowards is one of six trailing by one and nine players, including former champion T.T. Crouch, trail by two.
The second round begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. and the field will be reduced to the low 60 scores and ties for Wednesday’s final 18 holes. ROUND 2 STARTING TIMES >
