FIRST-ROUND 64 GIVES HIM 2-SHOT MARGIN OVER KENT STATE ASSISTANT RYAN YIP
Pickerington’s Alex Weiss picked up where he left off last year during the first round of the 99th Pyramid Treating/Minute Men Ohio Open. Presenting Sponsors are Jack Trier & Family and Meritech.
Weiss, 24, opened with an 8-under 64 at Fox Meadow on Monday and holds a two-shot lead over Kent State assistant coach Ryan Yip, whose 6-under 66 at Weymouth left him alone in second place.
The second of three rounds begins Tuesday at both sites in what is regarded as one of the most elite events in Ohio.
Weiss, a 2018 graduate of Marshall University, was one of three medalists in the 2019 Ohio Open when he shot a sizzling 11-under 61 in the final round at Weymouth only to lose to eventual champion Stephen Gangluff on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.
Four players, including Kent State head coach Jon Mills, were tied for third place at five-under 67. Amateurs Bryce Haney (Huber Heights) and Cole Corder (Beavercreek) and professional Ryan Troyer (Dover) also shot 67.
Two-time defending champion Gangluff (Marysville) was one of 15 players to shoot one-under 71 and three-time Ohio Open champ Bob Sowards (Dublin) was one of two players in a four-under 68.
The field of 233 – from an original 237 following four withdrawals — will split playing 18 holes at each course before the final 60 low scores (and ties) return to Weymouth for the final 18 holes on Wednesday.
Approximately 73 percent of those shooting par or better played at the shorter and more wide-open Fox Meadow. Par is 72 at both courses.
Weiss, who had been competing on the PGA LatinoAmerican Tour before the COVID-19 pandemic halted play, had nine birdies and one 3-putt bogey at Fox Meadow. Beginning on the back nine he made the turn at 3-under 33 before catching fire on the front. He birdied four straight holes and five of his final nine to shoot five-under 31 on the front. His round included two chip-ins on the front nine.
Yip, who joined the KSU staff late last summer, had not played a competitive round in almost a year. He had eight birdies but two bogeys in his round of 33-33.
