BARBERTON’S CHASE JOHNSON FIRES 10-UNDER 62 TO TAKE FIRST-ROUND LEAD IN 98TH OHIO OPEN
Chase Johnson said it is too early for predictions.
Yet, there is no denying the former Kent State standout was pleased with his position after the first round of the 98th Davey Tree/Minute Men Ohio Open presented by Pyramid Treating & Meritech at Fox Meadow Country Club.
Johnson scorched Fox Meadow with a record-setting 10-under 62 on Monday to take a 2-shot lead in the 54-hole event that is held at Fox Meadow and nearby Weymouth Club.
The field of 166 was split between Fox Meadow and Weymouth, both with par 72. The field will be cut to the low 50 and ties after Tuesday’s second round. Wednesday’s final round will be played at Weymouth, which proved the more difficult of the two.
Johnson’s bogey-free round included eight birdies and one eagle. The Barberton native birdied five of his first seven holes and six of nine on the front to make the turn in 6-under 30.
“That’s quite a turn-round for me,” said Johnson, a Walsh Jesuit graduate. “Instead of making the turn at 6-under I’m usually at 2-over and have had to fight my way back. So, this is a nice position to be in. But, there is a long way to go.”
Columbus amateur Jack Kozlowski stood alone in second place with an 8-under 64 at Fox Meadow. Jack Nicklaus was the last amateur to win the Ohio Open when he won as a 16-year-old in 1956.
Kirtland’s Alex Andrews, a former Gilmore Academy and Wittenberg player who now plays on the LatinoAmerica Tour, is in third place after a 7-under par 65.
Tyler Light, a former Malone University star, was in fourth position after the Strasburg native used a five-under 31 on Weymouth’s back nine to finish at 6-under 66.
After making the turn at 1-under, Light ripped off four birdies and an eagle on his first five holes on the back. His eagle-2 came when he holed out from about 80 yards on the 417-yard 11th and was sandwiched between four birdies.
Johnson, 23, made his third Ohio Open start stunning from opening to closing. After his birdie barrage on the front nine he made five straight pars on the back and stood at 7-uner after a two-putt birdie on the 504-yard 15th.
His eagle-2 came on the 340-yard 17th hole when his drive reached the front fringe and he rolled in a 45-foot putt.
“I really drove the ball well all day and had a bunch of wedges in,” said Johnson, a former Mid-American Conference player of the year. “The fairways were firm despite all the rain we have had but the greens were at a good speed and ran true.”
Johnson, who competed on the Latino-American Tour, hit 15 of 18 greens, nine of 14 fairways and had 26 putts.
Weymouth played almost three strokes tougher than Fox Meadow. Of the 74 players to come in at par or better, 46 came at Fox Meadow.
Four former champions are within nine shots of the lead. Reigning champion Stephen Gangluff shot 69 at Weymouth. Chase Wilson, the 2017 champ, shot 70 at Weymouth. Three-time champ Bob Sowards, seeking to become the first player ever to win the Ohio Senior Open and Ohio Open in the same year, had a 71 at Weymouth and Tim Crouch, the 2016 winner, shot 71 also at Weymouth.
