The first of 13 major events conducted by the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association (NOPGA) will take place next week with the playing of the 39th Ohio Senior Open on Wednesday, May 29th and Thursday, May 30th on the Fazio Course at Firestone Country Club.
The 36-hole stroke-play event, sponsored by Michelob Ultra, ForeverLawn, and Invited, will be conducted in two divisions. The Senior Division is for players age 50-and-over as of May 29, 2024. Players age 60-and-over qualify for the Senior Plus Division.
It is open to professional and qualifying amateurs.
DUBLIN PROFESSIONAL BOB SOWARDS WILL ATTEMPT TO WIN UNPRECEDENTED SIXTH STRAIGHT OHIO SENIOR OPEN TITLE
When it comes to the Ohio Senior Open nobody does it better than Dublin’s Bob Sowards.
At least no one has done it better over the last five years.
Sowards, the Director of Instruction at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio, will attempt to win an unprecedented sixth consecutive title when the 39th Ohio Senior Open is played on the Fazio Course of Firestone Country Club on May 29-30.
Conducted by the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association, the Ohio Senior Open is a 36-hole event that attracts contestants from across the state. It is sponsored by ForeverLawn, Michelob Ultra, and Invited. The field is limited to 144.
Competition is held in two divisions. The Senior Division is for players over the age of 50 as of May 29, 2024. The Senior Plus Division is for players 60-and-over.
Sowards, who turns 56 on June 9, became the all-time leading winner of the event in 2023 when he won for the fifth consecutive time, climbing past four-time champion Gary Robison (2018, 2015, 2010, 2004). After missing the tournament in 2023, Robison, the former teaching professional, head professional and Director of Golf at Firestone Country Club (1980-2006) and Canton Brookside Country Club (2007-2021), has returned to compete in 2024.
Sowards is one of the most decorated players in the field, having played in 12 PGA Championships and finishing in a tie for fifth in the 2021 Senior PGA Championship. He is a two-time winner of the prestigious Senior PGA Professional Championship (2023 and 2018). A former Nationwide Tour player, Sowards was the 2021 Senior PGA Professional Player of the Year.
