Taking full advantage of an early starting time with lighter winds, the team of Dr. Jeff Mallette and John Oyster executed exactly as they needed to on the front nine then closed strongly as the wind picked up to win the 2009 Turkeyfoot Spring 2-Man Scramble on Saturday.
The weather station at Portage Lakes recorded winds of 5-10 mph until just before noon. But soon after that, sustained winds of 20-25 mph with gusts in excess of 30 mph began and stayed until after the final group finished.
Oyster and Mallette posted the low front-9 score of 5-under par 31 early, performing well and exactly as they needed. Later, as the breeze started to pick up, they birdied 14, 16 and 18 to offset a bogey at 15, allowing them to post a 7-under par score of 64 that none of the later groups could catch.
Tying for second place at 6-under par 65 were the teams of Ross Beal / Charlie Manocchio (who played with Oyster / Mallette) and Josh Anderson / Todd Anderson (who shot a stunning 30 on the back nine late in the day in the strong winds).
50 teams competed on the day, a great turnout. The golf course conditions were excellent and the pins were set perfectly for a scramble. Thanks to Tim Davis, John Thornton, Charlie Mozingo and the entire staff for a well-run event.
