Cold temperatures and a persistent, chilling rain left the course unplayable and caused the cancellation of the first round of the 39th Ohio Senior Open on Wednesday at Firestone Country Club.
The event will be shortened to 18 holes and played on Thursday, using Wednesday’s original tee times. The field of 144 will tee off on the first and 10th tees of the Fazio Course starting at 8 a.m.
Officials from the Northern Ohio Section of the PGA said about half the field teed off in a steady rain and temperatures in the high 50s before play was called. All scores from the first round have been canceled.
For only the second time in tournament history, the Ohio Senior Open has been shortened to 18 holes. The only other time came in 2014 when NOPGA Hall-of-Famer Tony Milam won by three shots with an 18-hole score of 5-under 65.
