One of the best amateur golfers in Northern Ohio history died on Saturday, March 16, in Buckeye, Arizona.
Former Elyria resident Norton Brick, a 2019 NOGA Hall of Fame inductee, faced struggles with his heart and lungs over the last years of his life. To help mitigate these ailments, he moved to Arizona soon after retiring as the Toro regional sales director for golf course mowers and equipment, a job he held for 20 years with accounts all across Northern Ohio.
But in the decades before he left for Arizona, he was a golfing force. The preview story posted in advance of his Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Oberlin Country Club offered a recap of his sterling golf career.
Brick won three straight Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship titles in 2000-2001-2002.
He was the Northeast Ohio Amateur Champion in 2004.
He won five Greater Cleveland Senior Amateur Championships in 2007-08-10-11-12.
He won the Senior Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship twice, in 2010 and 2012, and he was twice named the NOGA Senior Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
Nationally, he qualified twice as an amateur for the U.S. Senior Open in 2003 and 2005.
Then made an equal number of trips to the U.S. Senior Amateur in 2009 and 2012 after turning 55.
In addition to his NOGA Hall of Fame induction, Brick was also a 2012 Hall of Fame honoree by the Ohio Public Golf Association.
Brick’s speech at the NOGA Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2019 was one for the ages. Stories shared with wit and wisdom that brought the house down. It was pure Norton Brick.
Fallon Zatorski, a niece of Norton’s, said the family is planning a celebration of life party. “We would love for any of his golf buddies to join if possible.”
