The 26th Ohio Cup matches began today at Barrington Golf Club in Aurora, Ohio, and after a morning of fourball matches and an afternoon of foursomes, the Northern Ohio PGA leads the Southern Ohio PGA 9-7 heading into tomorrow’s singles matches.
Captain Gary Robison has two years of experience as assistant captain to Gary Trivisonno, and he had an exciting first day as captain. “One thing that surprised me was that we lost matches that we were winning and we won matches that we thought we would lose,” Robison said.
This year, Robison is assisted by Mitch Camp and Tom Waitrovich.
Robison stayed with the Jim Troy/Darin de Lelys match against Chase Wilson and Jeff Olson, the final match of the day in the afternoon foursomes. The match started with Jim and Darin up two through five holes, but the pair found themselves three down with four to play. As the lone match on the course, Troy struck a long iron to 20-feet on the 18th hole, just in range for de Lelys to make the putt for birdie and win the 18th hole, halving the match in front of an excited Northern Ohio PGA crowd.
Out of 16 matches, seven of them concluded at the 18th green.
The teams of Cory Kumpf/Randy Dietz and Tom Atchison/Mitch Camp both went 2-0 on the day.
Day Two singles matches are set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning at Barrington.
