The Northern Ohio Golf Association has updated its Great Lakes Auto Player of the Year points lists to include its most recent tournaments, its current Season-Long Match Play standings, and some top finishes in state events like the Ohio Open and Ohio Amateur.
So why does that matter?
First, the lists are used to identify the 2020 Great Lakes Auto NOGA Player of the Year in championship and senior divisions.
Second, the lists provide a running total in the “Race to Firestone” to determine eligibility for the field for the Great Lakes Auto NOGA Tour Championship at Firestone Country Club!
The top 24 players on the POY points list in each division are eligible for the 36-hole Tour Championship in Akron. The first round will be played at Firestone West on Sunday, September 13, with the finale on the historic Firestone South Course on Monday, September 14.
Let’s see where things stand.
NOGA POY Points Standings
In the main division, 2019 NOGA Player of the Year Chris Okeson currently holds the top spot in an attempt to repeat as champion. With two NOGA victories already this season, Okeson currently leads multiple-time NOGA POY winner Brian Smith by 81 points.
In the senior division, Monty Guest continues to hold the No. 1 position, fueled by three wins this season: the Senior division of the Northeast Ohio Am; with partner Tom Laubacher in the Scratch Four-Ball at Lake Forest; and with a share of first place at the Summer Stroke Play. Guest’s closest pursuer is Mark Borlin at 111 points behind; it was he who shared the victory in the Summer Stroke Play at Plum Brook.
In the Race to Firestone, the 24th-position “bubble boys” are currently Brian Beebe in the main division and David Devault on the senior side.
But remember, a player must compete in at least three (3) NOGA Great Lakes Auto Scratch Series events during the 2020 season to be eligible for the Tour Championship.
So players further down the current POY standings still have a great chance to qualify for Firestone.
Just be certain to make at least three NOGA starts before mid-September!
