A Canadian player took medalist honors at the 2014 U.S. Open Local Qualifying Tournament at Weymouth Country Club in Medina today.
But the other five qualifiers who are headed to sectionals are all pros with close Northeast Ohio ties.
Wet conditions delayed the start of the event on Tuesday morning by two hours, so about 30 players had to return to the golf course on Wednesday morning to complete their rounds.
Ontario resident Matthew McMahon (pictured right) nabbed the medalist honors with a 4-under par 68.
Mayfield Sand Ridge pro Mark Evans, Youngstown native and Canadian Tour pro Garret Frank and Kent State coach Rob Moss all posted 2-under par 70.
Former Cleveland Am and PGA National Assistants champ Jake Scott finished at even par.
And in a 7-players-for-1-spot playoff, Pete Skirpstas of Medina grabbed the final spot to advance to sectionals.
