Ohio Golf AssociationFinal results from the 2012 Ohio Amateur Golf Championship, conducted July 10 – 13 by the Ohio Golf Association at Brookside Golf and Country Club in Worthington, Ohio:

HERDZONE.COM ““ Marshall senior golfer Nathan Kerns won his second major title of the summer in his home state, taking the 116th Ohio Amateur Championship on Friday at Brookside Golf & Country Club.

Kerns, of Ironton, finished with a 6-under-par 282 over 72 holes for a two-shot victory over Alex Redfield of Powell. Redfield is a recent Ohio State graduate and 2012 PING All-Midwest Region pick.

Only six golfers finished under par for the tournament.

Kerns, who won the Mid-Ohio Golf Association Championship earlier this summer, shot a 2-over 74 in his final round, but his first-round 66 on Tuesday remained the low score of the tournament over the 7,044-yard Brookside course.

Kerns took a two-shot lead into the final round, but the second- and third-place golfers heading into the final day ““ Bill Williamson of Cincinnati and David Haley of Hilliard ““ shot 5 and 3 over respectively.

The Thundering Herd golfer had a four-stroke lead until he double bogeyed the par-3 16th, but he finished par-par to get the title that previously had been won by such familiar golf names as Arnold Palmer, Ben Curtis and John Cook.

Kerns finished 17th in the Ohio amateur last year in Dayton.
