Canal Fulton’s Justin Lower shot rounds of 64-68=132 over the Ohio State University Scarlet Course to finish as co-medalist in U.S. Open Final Qualifying today in Columbus.
Posting 10-under par for the 36 holes, Lower tied with Seamus Power of Las Vegas. Lower made seven birdies in a bogey-free morning round, then made an eagle, three birdies, and two bogeys in the afternoon session.
Four players shot 9-under par 133 in Columbus, forcing a playoff for the three remaining qualifying spots. Brendon Todd of Athens, GA, amateur Gunnar Broin of Shorewood, MN, and Chris Naegel of Wildwood, MO, advanced, while Otto Black of Detroit, MI, is the first alternate.
In the Springfield, Ohio U.S. Open Final Qualifier, Uniontown’s Maxwell Moldovan made a solid run at one of four spots available there, shooting 68-66=134 to finish at 6-under par. While that total came up one stroke shy of a playoff for the final qualifying spot, Moldovan did win the playoff for the second alternate position.
Zac Blair of Orem, Utah, Beau Hossler of Austin, Texas, Carson Schaake of Omaha, Nebraska and Cameron Davis of Australia earned the four qualifying spots in Springfield. Davis won his spot in a playoff over former world number one Adam Scott of Australia, who is first alternate.
The qualifying players advance to Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina for the U.S. Open Championship from June 13th to 16th.
