Can a new national amateur golf tour generate interest from players when it makes its inaugural Cleveland-area stop?
The Hurricane Amateur Golf Tour (HAGT) was founded “with the intention of providing golfers of any age and skill level an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. The tour’s vision is to provide superb hospitality and make every event a memorable one. With different handicap flights, the HAGT offers every type of golfer a chance to play competitively.”
Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HAGT administers events all across the country. In 2014, the HAGT will launch into its inaugural season, conducting events in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and New Jersey.
The Hurricane Tour Cleveland Amateur is scheduled for May 31 – June 1 at Fowlers Mill Golf Club in Chesterland, Ohio.
All of the tour’s amateur-only events are 2-day, 36-hole tournaments with a dinner event held after Saturday’s first round.
Entry fee for the Cleveland event is $250 plus an HAGT Tour Membership Fee of $25.
Players have a chance to win merchandise from a $2,000 prize purse that will be split up amongst the flights depending on their size. Payout schedules will be released once player registration for the tournament has closed. The top 3 from every flight will be paid out no matter the field size and the amount each flight is paid will be based on the amount of players in that individual flight. If a flight has more than 20 players than we will pay out the top 5 place finishers from that flight.
Payouts on the Hurricane Amateur Golf Tour are made in the form of gift cards to the Hurricane Tour Shop.
Amateurs (both men and women) compete in flights based on their handicap and age:
Men’s Divisions: Woods: 0-5.9; Mickelson: 6-11.9; Singh: 12-17.9; Els: 18+
Women’s Divisions: Sorenstam: 0-6.9; Zaharias: 7-13.9; Lopez: 14+
Senior Divisions: Senior Woods: 0-6.9; Senior Mickelson: 7-13.9; Senior Singh: 14+

Robert, we are sorry you feel that way, especially if you had a bad experience with a golf tour in the past. We actually started in 2008 as the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, which was for children 11-18 years of age in the hopes that we could grow the game of golf. We also wanted for these kids to gain exposure to college coaches and help them prepare for their futures. We still run that tour to this day and have added a Collegiate and this newly founded Amateur Tour for the same reason. We want to continue to grow the game of golf, and allow for players of all ages and skills levels a chance to compete and have fun. I hope that you can see we are not just in this for the money, but for the love of the game and continued growth of this game as well.
I played in the American Amateur Golf Tour back in the early 2000’s, it was a tour formed out of Jacksonville? Interesting. I quit because I came to the conclusion, as did other players on the Cleveland tour, that the tour was nothing more than a money making scheme. We got nothing in return for all the money we payed into it. The tour changed names to the Michelob Ultra Golf Tour and then was eventually bought by The Golf Channel. No way I would pay that kind of money to play in that event. Makes no sense at all.
