The Golfweek Amateur Tour is coming to Northeast Ohio in 2019.
After successfully running the series in the Columbus area for several years, tournament director Butch Novak is bringing it to Northeast Ohio.
Novak will conduct nine tournaments at golf courses across the local area:
Sable Creek, Hartville
Windmill Lakes, Ravenna
Manakiki, Willoughby
Punderson, Newbury
Ellsworth Meadows, Hudson
The Quarry, Canton (a Course Member, pictured below)
Boulder Creek, Streetsboro
Pine Hills, Hinckley
…plus one additional site still to be determined.
There are some unique features to the Golfweek Amateur Tour CLE/AKR series of which players should be aware.
Compete Against Players of the Same Skill Level
First, each of these weekend tournaments is flighted by handicap. Nearly all of the weekend amateur golf tournaments currently held in Northeast Ohio are conducted at scratch. That leaves players who sport a higher handicap without much of an opportunity for competition against players of their own skill level.
The Golfweek Amateur Tour provides that weekend competitive tournament opportunity in the following flights:
Championship Flight: 0-3.9 hdcp
A Flight: 4-8.9 hdcp
B Flight: 9-13.9 hdcp
C Flight: 14-18.9 hdcp
D Flight: 19+ hdcp
Play in Tournaments Across the USA
Second, the Golfweek Amateur Tour is a national series, covering 50 different regions of the country. When you become a member of the Cleveland/Akron series, you gain access to any event you wish to play at any of the regional Golfweek Am tours across the USA! And there are some great courses around the country that host a Golfweek Amateur Tour event.
There are also a number of national Regional Events in addition to each local series, conducted throughout the year at some top-ranked golf courses across the country. Cleveland/Akron Golfweek Am Tour members are eligible to compete in those Regional Events, too.
The Greater Cleveland events are mixed in with four Ohio region events that are also available to all Golfweek Amateur Tour members in 2019:
Country Club of the North, Beaver Creek
Springfield Country Club, Springfield
NCR Country Club South, Kettering
OH/KY Tour Championships, Lassing Pointe, Union KY
From that OH/KY Tour Championship, flight leaders will be invited to compete against the top tour members from across the country at the 54-hole National Championship in Hilton Head, SC.
What You Need to Know About Joining
Not sure joining the Golfweek Amateur Tour is right for you? No worries. Novak allows any player to compete one time as a guest in any of the 2019 Cleveland events, so that you can give the Tour a try before committing as a member.
After that, if you decide to join for the season the membership fee is $69 for the year. Membership includes a 1-year subscription to GolfWeek Magazine, handicap services provided by USHandicap, discounted logo tour items and playing privileges in all Golfweek Amateur Tour events.
Entry fees for each event vary by golf course, typically between $85 and $95 for the Cleveland/Akron series. Regional and national events are a bit more. Payouts are made in Visa Gift Cards, so players don’t get golf merchandise certificates they don’t want or need.
