The Golf Heritage Society is bringing its annual meeting and memorabilia expo to Cleveland this year! For golf history lovers and golf memorabilia collectors, that means access to two FREE events of national interest which are open to the public – right here in your own back yard.
The GHS Annual Meeting is held in a different city every autumn. Jim Jeselnick, president of the GHS, is happy that Cleveland was chosen for the Society’s 49th gathering.
“This is an important event for golf historians and collectors around the country and abroad,” Jeselnick said. “To visit Cleveland for our 49th year should be great fun. This is a city that knows its golf antiques and values its golf history.”
The GHS will be at the Holiday Inn Rockside in Independence, at the intersection of I-77 and I-480, from Thursday, September 26 through Saturday, September 28.
During their three day meeting, the GHS will host two big FREE events that are open to the public:
GOLF COLLECTOR’S AUCTION – THU, SEP 26
The first event of the GHS Meeting is an auction of antique golf memorabilia and antiquarian books on Thursday, September 26 at 5 p.m.
PBA Galleries of Oakland will auction over 400 lots to attendees in the gallery as well at to telephone and online bidders.
The preview period for the auction begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Holiday Inn Independence. Or you can see all 400 lots online! >
GOLF MEMORABILIA SHOW – SAT, SEP 28
Then on Saturday, September 28th from 9a-5p, the Society will hold its annual national trade show and memorabilia expo at the Holiday Inn Independence.
Over 100 booths will display and sell golf antiques and golf collector items: golf clubs, balls, books, artwork, trophies, medals, photos, and more. Decorator pieces and dozens of other golf objects will be included as well.
Do you have some historic golf items you think might be of value? Find out for sure! Member collectors from 35 states will be on hand to give identifications and collector valuations of items that anyone may bring in for review. Grab any antique golf items you may have and take advantage of this opportunity: it’s like Antiques Roadshow for golf!
ABOUT GHS
The Golf Heritage Society (GHS) was founded in 1970 for the purpose of preserving the history of the Royal and Ancient Game and facilitating communication between its members, including golf course architects, authors, journalists, golf professionals, historians, collectors and avid golfers.
The Society publishes a full color quarterly magazine for its members, maintains the web site golfheritage.org along with a Facebook page, and holds regional meetings throughout the country. A full calendar of GHS events is posted on the Society web site.
THIS YEAR’S GHS MEETING
Many of the meetings include playing golf with antique equipment at courses built by architectural legends. For example, the GHS Hickory Championship will be played in Brecksville this year, on Friday, September 27th at the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, a Stanley Thompson design dating to 1924.
This year’s meeting also features a presentation Friday morning by renowned golf course architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan, who designed Erin Hills Golf Club, the site of the 2017 U.S. Open.
Later, a keynote speech will be delivered by LPGA icon Renee Powell of Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, at the Society’s dinner banquet on Friday evening. These events are open only to GHS members.
At that banquet, attendees have the opportunity to bid on a once-in-a-lifetime excursion with John Capers III, the noted historian of famed Merion Golf Club outside of Philadelphia, for an amazing day at one of America’s premier golf courses. This package for three golfers includes a tour of the historic Merion clubhouse and archives room, lunch on the world-famous upper terrace, a round on the historic Merion East Course with a caddie, and cocktails after play. The starting bid for this package for three is $1,500, with call-in bids welcome at 219-928-5585 or 412-606-6995.
