Stow’s Dave Trier Shoots a Saturday 69, Wins in a Playoff
Stow’s David Trier made five birdies on Saturday at Good Park Golf Course, but perhaps none of those were as big as the two pars he made on the difficult closing par-3 hole, the first in regulation and the second in a playoff.
Four players had a chance to win the tournament outright coming into the 198-yard ninth hole, with the nines reversed as done historically for the finish of championships at Good Park.
His first time through, Trier sailed a hybrid to the back fringe and two-putt for his three to finish at 1-under par for the tournament.
Playing alongside Trier, Brecksville’s Allen Freeman was at 2-under par when he teed off the ninth. But he missed his tee shot right and failed to get up-and-down, leaving both players tied at 1-under par in the clubhouse.
When the final group of the day made it to their final tee, first-round leader Jeff Semple of Canton sat at 2-under par for the tournament, while Dean Cutlip of Copley was at 1-under par. A par by Semple or a birdie by Cutlip would give that player the victory.
But Semple put his tee shot into the front right bunker, while Cutlip missed short right. Cutlip played first and chipped deep, just onto the fringe. Then Semple couldn’t get his first shot out of the heavy sand of the bunker, and his second attempt finished in the middle of the green to a deep hole location. Both players missed their putts from there, and the playoff was down to Trier and Freeman.
The playoff was short-lived, however. Trier put his tee shot in the front third of the green, while Freeman sent his tee shot into the right greenside bunker, and the ball stuck on the face just below the lip. Only able to hack it out five yards, Freeman then hit his par chip long.
Trier putted his first up to five feet, then made the par putt for a low-stress playoff victory.
Arguably, the biggest winner of the day was Jeff Luken of Middleburg Heights. Luken swept the entirety of the Saturday skins pot, a tidy $900, with a birdie to the deep hole location on the uphill par-3 sixth.
