DREW SALYERS SHOOTS FINAL-ROUND 68 TO WIN 103RD OHIO OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP AT WESTFIELD
Drew Salyers shot a final-round 68 on Wednesday to win the 103rd Ohio Open Championship by one shot with a 54-hole score of 10-under par 200 on the South Course of Westfield Country Club.
Salyers, a former All-American and all-Big Ten player at Indiana University, had rounds of 67-65-68 to edge three players and continue the Ohio Open tradition of close finishes.
Since 2008, no one has won the Ohio Open by more than two shots.
Strongsville’s Jake Scott (66-68-67), Minerva’s Paul Wackerly (71-64-66) and Shaker Heights amateur Andrew Bailey (71-62-68) finished tied for second place at 9-under par 201. Bailey, the reigning Ohio Open champion, edged Pickerington’s Carson Bellish, a sophomore at Xavier, as the low amateur from the original field of 149 non-professionals.
About 12 players were in contention throughout the final round, and the lead changed hands several times between Salyers, Scott, Bailey, and Wackerly. Salyers took control with a birdie on the par-3 11th hole, followed by a decisive birdie on the 391-yard 16th when he made an 8-foot putt from behind the hole.
The victory came in Salyer’s first Ohio Open as a professional. He began the day as one of three players tied for second place, one shot behind second-round leader Daniel Wetterich, who shot a final-round 71 to share fifth place with Bellish.
First-round leaders Maxwell Moldovan, defending champion Michael Balcar, and Ball State senior Ali Khan fell out of contention midway through the final round.
The victory earned Salyers $10,000.
