TROY COASTS TO HIS THIRD PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS
CANFIELD — Jim Troy shot a final-round one-under 71 on Wednesday and cruised to a 9-shot victory in the 47th Northern Ohio PGA Professional Championship at Tippecanoe Country Club.
The victory marked the third time in the last four years that Troy, a Strongsville resident and teaching professional at The Golf Dome, has won the event.
He also was the runner-up last year and becomes the fourth player in NOPGA history to win the Professional Championship three times, joining World Golf Hall-of-Famer Denny Shute, NOPGA Life Member Tom Atchison, and long-time area pro Frank Beley.
With rounds of 71-65-71, Troy, a five-time NOPGA Player-of-the-Year, was the only player in the field of 58 to shoot three rounds under par and his 65 was the lowest by five shots.
Windmill Golf Center instructor Randy Dietz shot his third consecutive 72 for a 54-hole total of even-216 to finish second and Optimus Golf owner and former Barrington head professional Mark Sierak finished solo third at 73-74-70=217.
By virtue of their finish, Troy, Dietz, and Sierak automatically qualified for the 57th PGA Professional Championship, to be held in April at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Toledo Country Club head professional Jaysen Hansen and Portage Country Club instructor Steve Parker tied for fourth place at 219. Hansen defeated Parker in a two-hole playoff to determine the fourth qualifier from Northern Ohio. Parker joins Mike Stone, Sean Kenily and Jon Jones as an alternate.
