FINAL RESULTS: 2023 Summit County Amateur Championship

Tallmadge native and Bowling Green Junior Darin Hudak backed up his first round 68 at Good Park with a Sunday 69, and in doing so won the 2023 Summit County Amateur Golf Championship by a tidy three shots.

The victory had an historical note to it, as Hudak became only the second player in tournament history to win both the Summit County Amateur and the Summit County Junior Tournament, both played at Good Park. The first and only other player to do so is Akron sports agent Barry Terjesen.

Without question, Hudak played solid golf in finishing with a total of 5-under par 137 for the tournament. But he also was the beneficiary of the first round leaders not putting forth their best performances in the finale. Akron’s Ryan Gutowski backed up his first round 67 with a Sunday 74, while defending champion Solomon Petrie of Akron and the University of Kentucky also didn’t have his best stuff, returning a 75 after a Saturday 68.

Stow’s Dylan Dunn, who plays at Ashland University, was one of the trio of players just one shot behind after a Saturday 68, and he posted a 1-over par 72 on Sunday to finish in a tie for second place. Canton’s Josh Clay paired his even par 71 from Saturday with a strong 69 on Sunday to finish at 2-under par 140 and earn a T2.

Gutowski finished in a tie for fourth place with Cleveland State’s Gunnar McCollins of Massillon, who posted a Sunday 69 of his own. McCollins won the Stark County Am two weekends ago.

Three players won skins on Sunday, each with a different type of eagle: Ryan Stefanski made a field shot on the long par-4 7th hole for an eagle-2; Vaughn Snyder tapped it on to the par-5 5th hole and made the eagle putt; and Michael Bognar hit his tee shot onto the front of the reachable par-4 12th hole and drained the putt. Each skin was worth $390.
