Warren John F. Kennedy won the Boys Division III State Championship by one shot over Newark Catholic; Independence’s Mark Pillar won the individual title by two shots over Alex Eckstein from Youngstown Cardinal Mooney.
Warren John F. Kennedy and Newark Catholic were tied after the first round Friday, and JFK was one shot better on Saturday to claim the OHSAA Division III boys golf state championship on the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University.
On a sunny and warm Friday, both teams shot a 320. On a chilly and rainy Saturday, JFK shot a 328, while Newark Catholic shot 329. It was actually a come-from-behind title for JFK on Saturday, as their top four golfers shot a 170 on the front 9 and trailed by seven shots at the turn before shooting 12 strokes better on the back 9 to win by one shot.
It marks the fourth golf state title for JFK (1974, 2000, 2001) in their 16th trip to the state tournament, which had four sophomores and a senior in the lineup. Newark Catholic was making its eighth appearance in the state tournament and in the runner-up for the second year in a row.
JFK won the title despite only having one golfer in the Top 25, which was sophomore Andrew LaPolla, who finished 15th with an 81-76-157. Sophomores Andrew Fredenburg and Henry Phillips shot 164 and 166, respectively, while senior Bryce Van Horn shot a 171.
Independence senior Mark Pillar earned medalist honors with a 72-74-146. Sophomore Alex Eckstein was runner-up with a 76-72-148.
