FINAL RESULTS: 2023 Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship

Northern Ohio Golf AssociationFirst round leader Justin Atkinson of Brookfield put on a clinic at the 93rd Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship on Monday: how to play in windy, wet and chilly conditions.

After relinquishing the lead in Sunday’s second round, Atkinson, who plays golf for University of Findlay, shot a 3-under par 67 in Monday’s finale to win by a whopping five shots over Brody Simms of Dayton, who plays at Cleveland State.

The weather was a factor, as the wind swirled, the rain came down off-and-on, and the temperatures hovered closer to 60 than to the 80+ they had been for the first two rounds.

Atkinson finished at 6-under par 204, while Simms was the only other Championship Division player to finish under par for the three days at 209 (-1).

“The putter was good all week,” said Atkison on his key to victory. “I made a lot of 15-20 footers, especially today starting off the day. I made 15-footers on the first two holes just to save par. Then after that, I made some birdies and got it rolling.”

Zach Glassman
Zach Glassman captured the Mid-Amateur Division of the 2023 NEOAm.

Painesville’s Zach Glassman shot 74 at Windmill Lakes on Monday to finish at 1-over par 211 and in third place overall, while concurrently taking the top spot in the Mid-Amateur Division for players age 25+. Glassman bested Canton’s Vaughn Snyder by one shot for the Mid-Am title.

Snyder and second-round leader Kyle Buzaki of Stow finished in a tie for fourth place in the Championship Division.

“The first two days I really struck it well,” said Glassman of his tournament. “Then a 180 today: I really did not hit it well. Short game and putter is what saved me. It was one of those days, but I’m glad I was able to come out on top.”

Brad Steven
Brad Steven got the job done in capturing the Senior Division title.

In the Senior Division, Concord’s Brad Steven overcame the worst of the day’s weather well enough to shoot 74, earning a three-shot win over Marc Fried of Solon. Steven finished at 2-over par 212 for the 54 holes.

“The weather was tough from beginning to end,” said Steven. “Got off to a bit of a rough start, but then I settled myself and played really well through the middle of the round. I made a bad mistake on 16 that led to a double, and made a mess of 17. But I was able to bring it home, so it’s a nice win.”

Northeast Ohio Women’s Amateur

The finale of the 3rd Northeast Ohio Women’s Amateur Championship was played today at Windmill Lakes, and the two first-round leaders were able to convert their advantages into victory.

Megan Yoder
Megan Yoder won the 3rd NEOWA by three shots.

Megan Yoder, who plays golf for the University of Dayton and lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana, backed up her first round 73 with a Monday 78, good for a three shot win over Rachel DiDonato, Akron, who closed with a 74.

“I didn’t play that well today, especially after coming off a good round yesterday,” said Yoder. “But conditions were tough and I was able to pull it out.”

Denise Callahan
Denise Callahan held on for a one shot victory in the Senior Division.

In the Senior Division, Canton’s Denise Callahan held on for a one shot win over Dawn Swit of Chagrin Falls.

“The conditions were tough with the wind and the cooler temperatures,” said Callahan. “So it just made it tricky. It’s great just to be done, because the conditions were really super tough.”
