Belmont Country Club’s Mike Stone goes wire-to-wire to win Senior Professional Championship for first time
A closing four-hole birdie/eagle binge led to the tournament’s lowest round and helped Belmont Country Club PGA Assistant Golf Professional Mike Stone win the Northern Ohio PGA’s Senior Professional Championship on Friday at Shawnee Country Club.
Stone, 51, played his final five holes in 5-under par with three birdies, an eagle and a closing par to shoot 4-under par 68 for a 36-hole total of 5-under 139. That total was good for a three-shot win over Portage Country Club PGA Teaching & Coaching Professional Steve Parker (72-70-142) and four-time champion and PGA of America Life Member Gary Trivisonno (73-69-142). Tom Atchison, also a PGA Life Member, finished fourth at 75-72-147.
Stone’s 68, coming after an opening 1-under 71 on Thursday, was the lowest round of the tournament and gave him his first Senior Professional Championship title.
As the top four finishers, Stone, Parker, Trivisonno and Atchison qualify for the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Championship, to be held at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., October 24-29.
Dan Sutton (Heather Downs C.C.), Steve Mulcahy (Shawnee C.C.), Gary Rusnak (1899 Golf, CLE East) and Steve Stone (McDivots Driving Range) will serve as alternates. Steve Stone is Mike Stone’s brother.
