GAMBONE AND MILLARD WIN MEDALIST HONORS
It matters little on how you get to the top of the mountain just as long as you get there before everyone else.
Leading a golf tournament wire-to-wire or coming from behind to win. The method is not as important as the conclusion. Both efforts have their virtues. Style points and hardware are awarded either way.
Leading a tournament from start to finish is a sign of steady dominance, of superiority. Coming from behind to win is a sign of doggedness, of persistence.
Both are to be applauded.
So, it was on a windy and overcast Tuesday at Oberlin Golf Club where North Canton’s Daniel Gambone and Aurora’s Brooklyn Millard came away as the big winners in the Northern Ohio PGA’s Junior Section Championship, punching their tickets to a national event in August at the same time.
Gambone, a junior at Hoover High School and the NOPGA Player-of-the-Year in his age group last year, came from two strokes behind to win the 16-18 age group – and overall medalist honors – with a 36-hole score of 74-72=136.
Westlake’s Sion Park, the first-round leader, finished second at 72-76=148.
Millard, a senior at Aurora High, led wire-to-wire to comfortably win the girls 16-18 age group and claim medalist honors. The 16-year-old never trailed as she opened with a 73 on Monday and came back with a 76 on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 149.
The runner up spot went to Caroline Thompson from Montgomery, OH, who defeated Alyssa Zhang of Allison Park, PA in a one-hole playoff after both finished at 153.
The performances by Gambone, Park, Millard and Thompson earned them trips to the National Junior PGA Championship, which will be held Aug. 1-4 at Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark.
“This means the world to me,” said Gambone, who won six tournaments last year in earning his POTY award but had gone winless this season while having several near-misses. “I hadn’t won this year, but I was always just one or two or three strokes off. So, this feels great to win.”
Millard, a native of Los Angeles, said she has never been to Arkansas but was excited about going.
“It’s always exciting to win,” said Millard. “I’m looking forward to going to the next level.”
North Ridgeville’s Fitch Farina, who will enroll at St. Ignatius as a freshman in the fall, won the boys 14-15 age group with a 73, shaving four strokes off an opening 77 for a total of 150. Alexander Eckstein was runner up at 152.
Brunswick’s Ellie Gonazalez-Ribble shot 81-81=162 to win the Girls 11-15 by one shot over Callie Reed (83-81). Eli Stewart’s 82-83-165 was good enough to win the boys 11-13 group over Ray Koeberle (88-89), of Wadsworth.
The event attracted 132 players.
Millard continues to add accomplishments to her golf resume. She was a qualifier for the 2021 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the runner up in the Division I state high school tournament, also in 2021.
She was 4-over after four holes but birdies on the 358-yard seventh and the long par-5 ninth got her back on track.
She knocked her second shot on the seventh to within two feet for a tidy birdie and nearly eagled the 467-yard ninth but her putt from the back of the green hung on the lip.
“It was a millimeter from going in, I swear,” she said.
Still, a tap-in birdie was a nice way to close out the front nine and no one was able to mount a challenge the rest of the way.
The best round of the day – in either age group or gender — came off the clubs of Hinckley’s Craig Carneval, who had five birdies enroute to a two-under 70. That shaved a whopping 17 strokes off his opening round.
Gambone, who turns 16 on June 22, felt that a clutch 6-foot putt for birdie on the par-5 ninth was a key to playing well over the final nine holes.
“I was 2-over going to the ninth so making birdie there really important,” he said. “From that point on I knew that if I just played my game, stayed focused mentally and not over-swing I’d be okay.”
He had two birdies and six pars over his final eight holes while others around him fell behind. He either made par or birdied Oberlin’s four par-5’s. He also birdied the 445-yard 12th by making a 10-foot, left-to-right putt.
“Last year I was one of the oldest guys in my age group so all season I felt I had an advantage over the younger guys,” he said. “Now, I’m one of the younger guys but I feel I’m right where I want to be.”
On Tuesday he was right on top.
