Canton’s Aaron Crewse took control of the 2022 Senior Summit County Amateur Championship with a 68 on Friday at Good Park, then made enough pars throughout the day on Saturday that no player could catch him.
Hudson’s Mark Guadagni had the hottest start on Saturday, reaching 4-under par through his first six holes of the day to add a bit of pressure to the proceedings. But he dropped shots on his way in, allowing Crewse to just keep finding fairways and greens then make two putts to roll to victory.
An eagle-2 on the reachable par-4 12th by Bobby Spino and an eagle-3 on the par-5 5th by Brian Huntley also made for a bit of Sunday noise. While they were each good for a skin, in the end they didn’t affect the Crewse result much.
Crewse had a four shot lead as he played his final hole, the long par-3 ninth. He hit a good tee shot, but it hit the front part of the green hard and bounded just over the back-left of the green, down the slope. Given he was up by so many shots, he tried the hero flop shot…
…but it came up short in the fringe. So he gave back two shots on the last, but still won by two. It was a solid display of golf, and a good close-out.
Guadagni’s second round 70 earned him second place overall and top honors in the Super Senior Division for players ages 60-69 at 1-over par 143. Bill Downing won the 70+ Division by four shots with a 153.
