FINAL RESULTS: 2022 Lewis Cup

The Amateur Team began the day with a one point lead over the Senior Team, and after 12 Singles Matches the 2022 Lewis Cup Matches went to the Amateurs because of that one point lead.

On a beautifully sunny but windy October day, with Westfield Country Club’s North Course presenting some super fast greens and challenging hole locations, the Amateur Team and the Senior Team won six points each on Sunday. Both side won five matches, and two matches were halved on the final hole.

The Seniors needed to make up one point after Saturday’s Four Ball and Foursomes to retain the Cup, as they were defending champions. But the Amateurs played well in the early matches, the Seniors earned points in the later matches, and it came down to the Captains in the final match to see which team would win the Cup.

If Senior Captain Mark Borlin could vanquish Amateur Captain Brian Smith, the Seniors would retain the Cup.

Borlin was 1-up at the turn, but Smith won the 14th hole to square the match. After a couple of halves, Smith hit a great shot at the uphill-into-the-wind penultimate hole, and won the hole to secure the Cup for the Ams. But Borlin birdied the last with a 25-foot putt to square his match with Smith, earning a roar of approval from the players who watched on.

With the Lewis Cup, the Northern Ohio Golf Association has created a great event that the players love, made even more special because of the fantastic Westfield facility. After two playings, it seems like a tournament that will have a long history.
