Fairlawn’s Shaun Kloetzer shot 1-under par 70 on Saturday, held it together on Sunday with a 78, then defeated Mike Simspon in a playoff to win the 2020 Turkeyfoot Championship in Akron’s Portage Lakes.
Simpson bettered his Saturday 75 with a Sunday 73, so he and Kloetzer went to a playoff on the 10th hole. Kloetzer drove it over the green on the reachable par-4, while Simpson hit it into the front bunker. Simpson went from the bunker to the back fringe of the green with his second shot, while Kloetzer chipped back up the hill to about six feet. Simpson then left his birdied putt six inches short in the heart from about 20 feet. Taking advantage of the opportunity quickly, Kloetzer buried the six footer for birdie and a playoff victory.
In the Senior Division, there was no drama as to who would win: Windham’s Rob Schustrich blistered the field on Sunday with a 7-under par 64 to win going away, shooting 33-31 to capture the title by seven shots over Mark Borlin.
In the Super Senior Division, the ageless Joe Hedrick posted a pair of 74s to take yet another Turkeyfoot title, this time by three shots over defending Super Senior Champ Fred Miller.
And in Sunday’s Ladies Course Championship, Diane Rubin Schuld shot an 81 to win the Gross Division, while Arica Hull captured the Net title with 72.
