Rob Schustrich of Windham won his third career Senior Summit County Amateur Championship title today, and he did it in solid fashion.
He backed up his first round 69 at Barberton Brookside with another 69 at Good Park Golf Course in Akron.
Schustrich’s 5-under par 36-hole total was good for a two shot victory.
Bobby Spino finished in second place after a pair of roller-coaster 70s and a 3-under par total. Plenty of birdies, bogeys and even a skin-winning eagle on Friday.
First round leader Kurt Peterson of Massillon, who shot 68 at Barberton Brookside, was neck-and-neck with Schustrich for the championship until the reachable par-4 12th hole. There, Peterson knocked his drive right of the green into some heather. Pitching toward the green, he double-hit his shot from the thigh-high grass and it went into the greenside bunker. While none of the other players in the group knew of the double-hit, Peterson knew what he had done and he called the penalty on himself. It led to a triple-bogey 7, from which he couldn’t recover and finished third.
Rounding out the top 5 were Brian Huntley — who padded his take with a skin Sunday, making an eagle on the par-5 second — and Rick Kies, solo fifth one shot behind Huntley.
Spino, Huntley and Kies all shot 1-under par 70 on Sunday at Good Park.
Dave Trier of Stow nabbed the other Sunday skin with an eagle on the par-5 14th. Huntley and Trier each earned $550 for their skin.
In the Super Senior Division for players age 60+, a four-way tie at the top at 3-over par 146: Jeff Dean, Bruno Chirumbolo, Tom Baugh and Larry Lahnan.
Fred Martin won the age 70+ Super Super Senior Division with a 149.
