On a hot, windy day — and on a Good Park Golf Course that may be in its best condition ever — Ty Kovach of Medina and Allen Freeman of Brecksville managed the three jumble formats one stroke better than everyone else to capture the 2016 Joe Ungvary Sr. Memorial Tournament.
Kovach and Freeman had a mediocre 2-under par scramble, a Kovach-led explosion of 3-under par to win the better ball session, and a just-good-enough 1-over par in alternate shot to shoot 67 and win by one shot over three teams — and an incredibly talented field.
Steve Blackburn Jr. and Doug Barber raced out to the lead in the six hole scramble segment, posting a blistering 5-under par 19 in that format. But the pair could only manage even par in the better ball and 2-over par in alternate shot, finishing at 68.
Joe Ungvary Jr. (son of the event’s namesake) and NOPGA Tournament Director David Griffith played the most steady, shooting 2-under / 1-under / even par to also finish at 68.
Kent State star Ian Holt paired with Alex Loftin, and after the scramble and better ball segments that team sat at 5-under par. But a 2-over score in the alternate shot left them at 68, too.
And one of the pre-tournament favorite teams of Kurt Peterson and Dave Oates were in position to win right up until the end, but they also posted 1-over par in alternate shot to finish at 68.
There were no overwhelming money winners on the day, as the wealth was spread around quite a bit between the segments, skins, and overall winners. That always makes for a rewarding day for a lot of players — something ‘The Czar’ would have been happy to see…
