Former Cleveland State player Michael Balcar from Toledo (pictured above) played in the morning wave on Friday at the 2016 Tigertown Open. He toured The Elms Country Club in Massillon in a smooth 6-under par 66, a score that put him atop the leaderboard in the Professional Division for much of the day.
That was until Stephen Gangluff of Westerville (right), playing in one of the last few groups of the day, birdied two of his final three holes to post 65, take the championship and earn the hearty $5,000 first place check.
Gangluff knew that 66 was the best score of the day as he headed into those final few holes. To then birdie the holes that he did at The Elms is a spectacular feat: #16 is a 473-yard par 4 and the number 1 handicap hole, and #18 is a 440-yard par-4 with a green with huge back-to-front slope. No small task.

Balcar had to settle for the second place prize of $1,500. Pro and pub owner Darrin Vaughan shot 67 to finish in third place and earn $1,000, while Massillon native Richie Schembechler and Toledo pro Mike Stone tied for fourth place to earn $325 each.
In the Senior Professional Division, Painesville native and world-traveling golf professional Gary Rusnak (pictured below) shot a sizzling 66 that included a hole-in-one at the 203-yard 17th hole. Rusnak won by a whopping seven shots over runner-up Jim Cichra.
In the Amateur Division, former Youngstown State player Mitch Levengood (left) posted a 2-under par score of 70 to win the am title, fighting off a whopping NINE players who all shot 71.
In the Senior Amateur Division, Tim Ford (right) shot a score of 69 in the afternoon wave to move past runner-up Bobby Spino of Massillon.
In addition to Rusnak’s hole-in-one on the 17th, pro Chase Wilson also made an ace on the par-3 ninth hole from 166 yards.
