FINAL RESULTS: 2016 Summit County Amateur Golf Championship

Summit County Amateur Golf ChampionshipJake Appleby is having a good golf summer.

He has already won the Zoar Memorial and the Portage County Am in 2016, and shot 69 at a crazy-tough Sleepy Hollow setup in the first round of the Cleveland Am Qualifier two weeks ago.

The Saturday 66 he shot at Good Park in round one of this year’s Summit County Amateur Championship certainly has to be a summer highlight, too. It gave Appleby a two shot lead and another chance to win a big local tournament before he begins his sophomore season as an Akron Zips player.

But there was a ton of talent ready to push back against him at Good Park.

Chase Johnson 2016 Summit County Am

Barberton’s Chase Johnson (pictured above), a Kent State player who shot 63 in the second 18 to medal at this year’s U.S. Am Qualifier at Avon Oaks, was not going to give up without a fight. Nor was Aurora’s Bud Radis, who was only two shots behind after Saturday’s first round. Nor past champions of the Summit County Am like Aaron Crewse or Howard Clendenin, or veteran players like Larry Lahnan, Steve Blackburn Jr. or Chris Okeson.

Appleby was going to have to earn it.

But the golf course was lengthened to the back-of-the-back-tees for Sunday, and the traditional bunker-tucked hole locations were put into play. When the sun shone brightly to dry out the greens and the wind kicked up for the afternoon rounds, it made mounting a charge on Appleby that much more difficult.

Chris Okeson 2016 Summit County AmAppleby turned the front nine in even par, which made the catch-him task almost impossible. Chase Johnson and Chris Okeson (right) did the best to maintain pace late on the final nine; both players were within one shot of Appleby at one point in their rounds.

But none of the players in the hunt could get then stay under par to turn up the pressure. In the end, Appleby knew exactly where he stood and managed his way around the tough final nine holes at Good Park to get into the house with a 3-over par 74, which was good for a two shot victory.

The story of equal interest to the field in the 2016 Summit County Am was the fact that no skins were won on Saturday, which pushed the first day’s skins pot into Sunday. Players were trying to make an eagle or hole out a shot from the fairway all day long on Sunday to get their share of the $2,620 sitting in the skins coffers.

Two players were successful.

Scott Mullen made eagle 3 on the short par-5 second hole, then dodged bullets from the rest of the field as many had chances to tie off his skin from on or around the green. It held.

John KabaskyJohn Kabasky (left) flipped in a chip from greenside at the 315 yard par-4 12th hole to make the only eagle of the day there. Just like the second hole, dozens of players had a chance to tie Kabasky’s eagle, but no one did.

So both Mullen and Kabasky are now each $1,310 richer.

Gift certificate prize amounts are also listed below, with cards available Wednesday morning at the Golfsmith store in Fairlawn.
