FINAL RESULTS: 2016 Ohio Senior Open

Canton amateur Nick Lambos birdied four of his final eight holes to earn a stunning comeback victory in the 2016 Michelob Ultra Ohio Senior Open at the Firestone Country Club West Course today.

Lambos beat the best senior professional golfers in the state of Ohio with precision shot-making and incredible putting down the stretch.

Down by two strokes to veteran champion pros Gary Trivisonno of Aurora (right) and Canton’s Gary Robison with eight holes to play, Lambos made one great clutch shot after another.

He birdied the tough par-4 11th hole.

In the deep greenside bunker in two on the par-5 13th and looking at the water on the opposite side of the green, he blasted to two feet to get up-and-down for birdie.

Then he covered pars on the tough par 3-4-3 stretch of 14-15-16.

But it was the par-5 17th that made all the difference.

Trivisonno and Robison both had great looks at the green in two on the short par-5. But Robison dumped his fairway metal into the front bunker. And after a huge drive, Triv flared his 5-iron approach right of the green. Both hit good recovery shots, but neither player made the birdie putt and both settled for par.

Now tied with the two Gary-pros standing in the fairway at 17, Lambos hit his second shot right at the flag, sticking it to eight feet for eagle. He left the putt just on the high lip and tapped in for birdie. Lambos had a one shot lead.

Ahead, Robison went left with his drive on 18 and it found the pines. Bogey. Triv busted yet another tee shot and had a wedge in. But he missed the green short-right and chipped up close for par.

So playing in the final group on the final hole, Lambos had a one shot lead standing on the 18th tee. With a look of calm, he simply split the fairway center cut, hit his second shot to 7 feet, then gently rolled home the putt for birdie to extend the margin of victory to two shots. An impressive display.

Lambos’ win is only the third time in the history of the Ohio Senior Open that an amateur has taken the championship.

And a number of other amateurs played great this year, too. Dr. Jeff Mallette finished in solo fourth place at even par for the two days. Monty Guest posted a 69 in round two to finish T8. Five of the top 12 finishers were amateur players.

In the Super Senior Division for players age 60+, Rob Herron of Washington Court House took the top spot at 3-under par 137. He beat Canton Brookside pro Jim Logue by three shots.
