The Highland Hornets (pictured above) finished as runner-ups at the 2016 Girls Division I State High School Golf Championships on Saturday in Columbus.
The score of 311 shot by Highland tied Olentangy Orange for the best of the day, but the Pioneers won on a fifth player tie-breaker — by a single stroke!
The Hornets were able to take solace in the fact that talented Cleveland State recruit Madison Butler (left) fired a 71 to share Co-State Champion individual honors with Abby Kiefer of Dublin Jerome.
Kory Nielsen of Kent Rossevelt, Christina Williams of Highland, and Jennifer Wang of Solon all shot 74 to earn first team All-Ohio status.
Senior Hannah Lemons of Jackson shot a 75 to earn second team All-Ohio honors and finished with a birdie on her final high school hole.
Other local team finishes were Massillon Jackson 6th, Kent Roosevelt 7th, Solon 10th, and Canton Glen Oak finished 11th.
The highest individual qualifier from Northeast Ohio to play at State Division I was Jacinta Pikunas of Boardman, who shot a 78.
Due to inclement weather on Friday that canceled play, the tournament was shortened to an 18-holes played Saturday only.
