Everyone made a run at Tim Crouch of Mount Vernon: a guy shooting a course record; a couple of red-hot amateurs; all of the best professional golfers in Ohio.
With the NOPGA’s scoreboards located throughout the back nine at Westfield Country Club’s South Course, Crouch knew exactly where he stood and what he needed to shoot to win as early as the 12th green.
With all that, Crouch still came out on top.
Akron’s Ryan Gutowski posted a course-record score of 9-under par 61 six groups in front of Crouch, to finish at 11-under par 201.
Stow amateur and Kent State player Ian Holt (right) kept pushing up the leaderboard as well. Holt made birdies on three of his last four holes (and just missed the fourth in four when his ball slid off the edge of the hole on the par-3 16th). Holt also posted an 11-under par total for Crouch to see, finishing two groups ahead of Crouch. (Holt finished as low amateur, but Medina’s Patrick Luth was only two shots behind.)
And playing in the final group of the day, Blake Sattler of New Philadelphia (left) played directly behind Crouch and kept applying pressure, reaching 11-under par after 15 holes. Sattler had good birdie chances on each of his last three holes, including a downhill chip from just off the back on the last.
The tournament turned at the 14th hole for Crouch. He made a huge birdie on that tough, down-hill, water-protected par-3 to reach 12-under par for the tournament.
Then with great ball-striking on the final four holes, Crouch simply made par after par from there. He kept it simple by hitting fairways and greens, eventually cashing the big check as the 2016 Davey Tree Ohio Open Champion.
He earned it.
