The local qualifying tournament for the 2010 U.S. Amateur golf tournament Monday had a distinctive Mid-American Conference flavor with a heavy dose of Kent State.

Amateurs Dominate U.S. Open Local Qualifying
In an event typically dominated by professionals, amateurs Patrick Rodgers of Avon, IN and Dr. Jeff Mallette of North Canton claimed the top two places of seven total spots in Thursday’s U.S. Open local qualifying event at Weymouth Country Club in Medina.
Rodgers posted a 4-under par 68 to take the medalist honors, while Mallette shot 2-under par 70 to tie with professional Garrett Frank of Youngstown for second place. And the “am invasion” didn’t stop there.
2009 U.S. Mid-Am Qualifier Results
Local players Matt Heestand of Cleveland and Saumil Jhaveri of Westlake made it through the Northeast Ohio qualifier for the United States Golf Association’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Hudson today. The Mid-Am is for players age 25 and older. The Championship proper will be held at the Kiawah Island Club in Charleston, S.C. on October 3-8.

Latimer Out in Playoff for Match Play at U.S. Am
Nick Latimer of Brooklyn posted rounds of 75-73=148 to tie for 61st place and participated in a playoff this morning to make it to the match play portion of the United States Amateur Golf Championship at Southern Hills. Castor, Brick and Kain Qualify for U.S. Senior Am
Tom Castor of Ashland, Norton Brick of Elyria, and Bob Kain of Hunting Valley advanced from the local qualifier of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, held today at the challenging Kirtland Country Club.
Castor was medalist with a solid 1-over par 72, and Brick settled for a 74 after starting with a front nine of 34. Kain advanced after a round of 75 (which included a hole-out for eagle on a par 4) by winning a 3-players-for-one-spot playoff.
Castor, Brick and Kain move on to the Beverly Country Club in Chicago to play Sept. 12-17 in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. Complete results from the Kirtland qualifier follow:
Latimer, Metzendorf, Juszczyk Qualify for U.S. Am
Fresh off a record-setting victory in the Northeast Ohio Am, Nick Latimer of Brooklyn earned the medalist honors at the greater Cleveland area 36-hole qualifier for the United States Amateur Championship, posting a 2-under par total 142 that included a 4-under par 68 at Red Tail Golf Club in Avon.
Also qualifying was Dan Metzendorf of Strongsville with an even par score of 144 that included a second-round 69 at Avon Oaks. Joe Juszczyk of Dearborn Heights, MI grabbed the final qualifying spot by winning the first playoff hole in a four-player shoot-out after posting 1-over par 145.
The U.S. Amateur Championship will be played August 24 – 30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, OK. Complete results for all players in the qualifier follows…
